Dear Doctor,I am a 52 years old man, who brushes his teeth on a regular basis but I have noticed that I have still bad breath which is embarrassing. Should I visit the dentist? We’ve all experienced the unpleasant effects of bad breath at some point. Also known as halitosis, bad breath can be embarrassing and may cause us to shy away from talking to others. Typically, the first line of defence against offensive breath is your trusty toothbrush; brushing your teeth at least twice a day is recommended to keep your mouth clean and your breath fresh. But what if you’ve brushed your teeth and the problem persists? There are a few different things that could cause bad breath after brushing

6 possible causes of bad breath

  1. Gum Diseases
  2. Cavities
  3. Medical conditions as: Diabetes, Chronic Acid Reflux, Gastrointestinal issues, etc.
  4. Mouthwash
  5. Smoking and tobacco products

No matter the root cause of your bad breath, there are healthy habits you can develop to try to combat it:

  1. Floss daily:
  2. Drink plenty of water:
  3. Chew sugarless gum:
  4. Eat tooth-cleaning foods:
  5. Clean your tongue:
  6. Quit smoking:

It is adviced to visit your dentist regularly: If you have chronic offensive breath, your dentist may be able to discern the root of the problem. Regular hygiene cleanings will also help remove more odour-causing bacteria than at-home care alone. Your dentist and hygienist may also be able to spot areas you’re not able to reach by brushing alone. If this is the case, they may recommend better flossing techniques or even sealants to help prevent tooth decay.
