Skin Cancer and why a biopsy is so important.Skin cancer is the abnormal growth of skin cells which is
most often the result of overexposure to the sun and
harmful ultraviolet rays although well-covered areas of the
body, like your palms or genital area, also can be affected.
All pigmentations either dark or light are subject to skin
cancer.
Anyone is susceptible to suffer with skin cancer, but those
who have a higher risk include individuals who have a
heavy exposure to UV rays, lighter skin, family history of
skin cancer, prevalent moles, severe sunburns in the past
or a weakened immune system. A skin biopsy can be easily
performed to diagnose any suspicious growths.
The biopsy is performed by removing cells or skin samples from the
surface of your body. The sample taken from a skin biopsy is
examined to provide information about your medical condition. A
doctor uses this to help diagnose or rule out certain skin conditions
and diseases.
A skin biopsy may also be necessary to diagnose or to help treat
skin conditions and diseases, including:
 Dermatitis, psoriasis, and other inflammatory skin
conditions.
 Skin cancers, including basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell
carcinoma and melanoma
 Skin infections.
 Skin tags
 Suspicious moles or growths.
 Warts.
