Anxiety and its influence on overall health
Anxiety disorders are the most prevalent mental illness in the world. It affects 40 million adults each year, according to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America. “Anxiety” includes specific disorders, and it is not uncommon for people with anxiety disorders to also have depression, and vice versa. Almost half of people with depression are also diagnosed with an anxiety disorder. Anxiety and depression are so rampant in America, what are the negative effects on physical health?
What are some other physical manifestations of anxiety and depression?
Sleep disorder
Getting enough rest can be difficult for people with anxiety disorders. Worse, worrying about not being able to sleep can lead to more anxiety. Lack of sleep can lead to weight gain, compromise the immune system, and even lead to heart disease.
Hypertension
Anxiety attacks can cause a sharp, temporary rise in blood pressure, notes the Mayo Clinic. While there is no evidence that chronic anxiety causes high blood pressure, these short-term spikes can damage blood vessels, kidneys and heart. Also, anxious people are more likely to develop unhealthy habits that can lead to high blood pressure, such as smoking, drinking, and overeating.
Weight gain or loss
A study published in the American Journal of Epidemiology found that psychosocial stress, including depression and generalized anxiety disorder, is associated with weight gain and loss. Weight gain can lead to high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes.
Inexplicable pain
According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, pain can be a common symptom of an anxiety disorder. People with generalized anxiety disorder are especially prone to unexplained pain. Chronic pain can make work and daily life difficult.
Mal de crâne
Headaches are a common symptom and sometimes a good indicator of an anxiety disorder (most commonly generalized anxiety disorder). Like chronic pain, recurring headaches can make it more difficult for people with anxiety disorders to function or work.
Weakened immunity
Both depression and anxiety disorders are thought to negatively affect the immune system, making people with these conditions more susceptible to disease.
Stomach trouble
Anxiety attacks can cause abdominal pain and cramping. Additionally, anxiety and depression are associated with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). People with IBS often experience anxiety and depression. Anxiety can make IBS symptoms worse.
Urination fréquente
Urinary urgency is a common anxiety symptom. Some doctors believe this is due to the body’s natural “fight or flight” response. When a person is afraid, their bladder muscles contract and put pressure on the bladder.
The physical manifestations of anxiety and depression can affect overall health. But they can also serve as indicators of a person’s mental health and, in some cases, help diagnose undetectable anxiety or depression.
