Sclerotherapy is one of the procedures used to treat
varicose and spider veins usually found on the legs.
Varicose veins are generally raised, swollen, and
discoloured and can cause discomfort to the area affected.
Spider veins are smaller in size with a red or blueish colour
and closer to the surface of the skin.
This procedure is performed with use of an ultrasound if
needed by injecting a solution called sclerosant directly into
the vein which in turn damages the lining of the vein
causing blood clotting, this then forces the blood to reroute
through healthier veins. The vein then shrinks and is
absorbed by the surrounding tissues.
Sclerotherapy is a non-invasive treatment which has highly
effective results, the recovery period usually varies from 4
to 14 days depending on the size of the vein treated.
Sclerosing the veins is considered a better option than laser
treatment because it helps collapse and destroy the feeder
veins that can cause spider veins.
