A Podiatrist or more commonly known as a Chiropodist
are specialists that treat foot related conditions. Some of the
most common being ingrown toenails, nail fungus, calluses.
More in-depth problems treated are:
Fractures and sprains: Podiatrist can treat these injuries
when they affect a foot or ankle.
Diabetes: It is especially important for a diabetic to see a
podiatrist as the disease can damage the nerves that travel
from the legs to the feet causing lack of blood circulation, in
many cases leading to amputation.
Arthritis: This causes inflammation, swelling, and wear and
tear on your joints. A podiatrist can recommend exercises,
or make special shoes inserts to help deal with your
arthritis.
Heel pain: A common cause of this is heel spurs which is a
build-up of calcium at the bottom of your heel bone. This
can be caused from excess running, ill-fitting shoes, or
being overweight.
Plantar fasciitis: This is caused by an inflammation of the
band of connective tissue running along the bottom of the
foot. Using shoe inserts called orthotics can relieve the
condition.
Morton’s neuroma. Nerve problems between the third and
fourth bones of the foot causing pain, burning, and a
sensation that there is something in your shoe. It is a
condition that usually affects runners and wearing tight
shoes and overpronation tend to make it worse. A podiatrist
can advise on the necessary treatment to alleviate the
inflammation and pain.
Hallux Valgus Bunions and hammertoes. These are
problems with the bones in your feet. A bunion occurs when
the joint at the base of the big toe gets bigger or knocked
out of place making the toe bend toward the others, a
podiatrist can perform a simple operation in the surgery to correct this.

A hammertoe is one that does not bend the
right way which can cause pain and difficulty when wearing
shoes.
