My father has just been diagnosed with Colon
cancer, he seemed perfectly well apart from
some weight loss and bouts of diarrhoea. I am
worried as I have read that it can be hereditary.
Can you give me some advice.
Colon cancer begins in the large intestine which is
situated in the final part of the digestive tract. It
generally affects the older generation but can appear
at any age.
It is caused when small clumps of cells called polyps
form on the inside of the colon, varying in size and if
left untreated can become cancerous. Often there
are no symptoms so it is important to have regular
screenings especially for those with a family history
of colon cancer like yourself.
A change in your bowel habits, blood in the stool,
ongoing abdominal pain or weight loss can be
warning signs of the disease.
You should contact your GP to perform a
simple Fecal Immunochemical Test (FIT) which
detects blood that comes from the lower intestine,
and if necessary can organise for further tests such
as a colonoscopy.
