Hormonal acne is often referred to simply as acne.
It is sometimes called hormonal acne because of the way the skin problem develops in response to hormonal changes, and especially an increase in androgens such as testosterone.
Increased androgen levels can trigger a process of increased production of sebum (the oily substance produced by the sebaceous glands), changes in skin cell activity, inflammation, and colonization of hair follicles by bacteria known as Propionibacterium acnes ( P. acnes ). All of these elements can cause acne.
Acne lesions or pimples of varying severity typically affect the face and upper body. Acne is a common and treatable condition.
Hormonal acne isn’t a term used in medical research or by doctors, but is often used on the internet, in fashion magazines, or by people selling natural remedies. One reason it’s often called hormonal acne is to relate to the fact that it’s more common in teenagers going through the hormonal changes of puberty.
